Hmm - one more quick question - do you leave the paper mask on when cutting, or take it off, first?

leave it on, you dont need to go that deep, only go 1/3 of the thickness or so

now you need to cut something like this,

placing the leds in the edge of the pocketed area.
then the plexi,
viewing will be from the other side.

Running into a bit of a snag here.

trying to cut a sign in a .25 piece of plexi using a .25 dia 120 deg v bit to a flat depth of .125 using .060 per pass, but it seems that regardless of what speeds and feeds combo I try, am getting quite a bit of melting

Any suggestions? carving too deep? angle of bit too large?

help!!!

Note..using VCP here..don't have aspire (Yet)

dont go so deep. they have people on the intrent that are scratchin plastic with a nail, and getting it to work
i havent used that wide of a angle bit , either
also you can slow down the rpm as much as possible, put a thin layer of water/dishsoap on the surface to help cool the bit.

Changed from a .25 dia 120 Deg to a .25 dia 60 deg bit. changed the depth from .125 to .08333 (1/3 the material thickness - .25 plexi) and ran again at 10k rpm router speed at 40ipm. still got quite a bit of melting. Logged back on here and saw your water/soap suggestion sawmill so put some of that on the cut and am running it again. Thanks for the tip. didn't think of cooling the bit and it is a simple oversight, but should have a clean cut now with just a plastic slurry to hose off

Don't have any LED's yet, but just wanted to get my feet wet so to speak so I know what to do/don't do when I get back from my vacation (going to Minneapolis area 3rd & 4th).

I was getting quite a bit of melting, until I dropped my RPM's down to ~7-8K....

Finally got the frame done for the praying hands.
As usual I would do a few things differently.
Next time I think make a thicker frame and put the LED's in the wood not the Plexiglass.

Only thing missing in this pic were the white screws on either side (they were not in on this prototype)

Also used Sintra Plastic rather then wood..

They are very similar but I assume you started your design from the same point that I did, the LED strip and worked from there. The number of options for the basic base is probably limited but I do like the hidden screws for the top piece if indeed there are any at all.
Even stranger is the time frame as we must have designed them at about the same time as I made the Santa in time for Christmas 2009

Was your one used as a trophy for a TV Program? I see in New Zealand there is a 'Dancing with the Stars on Ice' tv program currently playing.

But the prize in my opinion goes to jmkissell for his praying hands in the round base.
That is an amazing piece of work and I can't help wondering what the combination of his frame and my clock would look like together, I think it would be cool.
