Cooler than sliced Bread

Those Look Great Ron!
Re: Cooler than sliced Bread
I am so exited to see these posts! This is exactly the idea that drove me to this website in the first place. I want to get a setup so bad I just can't stand it. I am currently looking at a shop bot buddy. I have considered doing a carvewright to try it in a small version but this forum makes me feel like I can start anywhere I want. You guys rock!
By the way, I have researched the plastics and the LEDs for quite some time now. Here are my favorite links:

If anyone from the Dallas Ft Worth area would be interested in running some pieces for me, I have the material and have already purchased the designs. I have another post from last December (sheesh, where did the time go?) that I will follow up on as well.
Thanks,

Thanks for the Links Elliott.
Yeah, you gotta dive in and get started. I have not been at it very long myself.
It looks a little intimidating before you get started.
But once you start you learn very quickly and it really is not that bad.
And I can honestly say that I am enjoying it tremendously.
I'm just a hobbyist, but this adventure is definitely worth the time and money.

Thanks to all that have shown interest, tips and pointers, and the great photos of your projects. I just finished another but it was needed as so as it was done for the title sponser to a triathlon. Wish I would of had the time to get a photo, I just purchased a new truck from them and their all of a mile down the road, so the next time I stop in there, I'll get a photo...............Buck

Projects look great!
One question.
How hot do LEDs get embedded in a wooden case covered by a large piece of plastic?

Thanks,
The butterfly is 9" X 12" - It actually has some LED's I had around lighting it, but they are not very bright. Also, I should have taken more time and set my camera correctly - they look better in person, even with the existing LED's. Another thing I noticed: the deeper the cuts, the more light is lost on the way up the acrylic. So I'd recommend shallow cuts for these - at least in the 1/4" material I was using!

Nice work to all. I am getting excited to try this out. Buck on your harley design, what tool did you use? Did you do a VCarve toolpath or a profile toolpath? I have been unable to replicate the crisp lettering that you have as well as the clearness between the letters and design. Everytime I run the preview, the tool wants to cut not just the letters, but pocket everything in between.

Dave, the Harley profile was cut using a 90 degree v-bit, if I remember right I had to do a little nobe editing to seperate some lines to get the v-carveing right, it wanted to clear an area toward the bottom of the profile. I cut the nobes and then re-connected them with the join tool.

Re: Cooler than sliced Bread
If one were to do this in PhotoVCarve, would you need to invert the photo before carving it out on the back of the plexiglas or leave it alone... (I used to have a brain, but I think when I checked the "Donate Organs" box, they decided not to wait )

Thought you guy's might be interested in this video I made on an Edgelit clock project.
It might help someone who wants to make one or nudge someone who is thinking about making one into action.
I hope you find it useful
Cheers

Re: Cooler than sliced Bread
Peter,
What a great project! I'm definitely going to give it a try. Everyone has done really great work and made it seem very doable.
Few questions:
What speed do you recommend for running the drill?
I noticed that you used a drill insert in the router to hold the 2.5 mm drill bit. Is this because you use normal drill bits that don't fit the standard shank size? If so where do you get the insert?
How deep do you engrave in the acrylic and what speeds are you running?
Is there any special acrylic that I need to get or will the Home Depot acrylic work ok.
I've watched several of your videos and they are all very informative and well done. You really have a knack for putting them together and editing them. I always look for your name on the posts and really enjoy them, please keep posting.
I assume that you use a standard video camera on a tripod but what software do you use to cut and edit the video?
Thanks again for posting.
Mark
