Running Horse Plaque

Post by Phil »

I recently carved the running horse from the 3D Model Club. It' carved on MDF with a Celtic border from Dover Clip Art. Since there has been some controversy over this model I only carved it for my personal collection. I am very pleased with the results

Nice job Phil, how did you do the weave part, did you manipulate it to fit the circle or is it like that & you resized it? Dubliner

Thats fantastic. The stain really doesn't look like MDF. :)

The stain technique I followed was detailed previously by Randall Newcomb. I sealed the 3D center with one coat of water based polyurethane then I applied Zar cherry stain, I worked it in with a small brush and dabbed off most of the stain with a paper towel, let it dry overnight then I buffed it and applied two more coats of poly.
I tried Minwax gel stain but it was too thick, it didn't penetrate very well. The Zar stain worked well for me.
The weave pattern was from a Dover Vector Clip Art Collection that I just bought.

Well done. I like how we can improve on each other's techniques.
