Hi James i have a 1.75 overhang on front so should be able to do around 48in one pass. for this i use 1.25 off set on y and 2.5 on x i dont have a clamping method yet just screws for now. i will send file for .5 blind maybe some one can improve on them.John, sorry forgot: profile cut outside .50 deep .375dia. 14 deg dove cutter use only 25 in pm @ 12000 rpm i use .375 end mill for tool path but actually use dove tail cutter instead.

Hey Guys...
If you would like some more info on the jig and the geometry behind it, you can look at my webcolumn on the ShopBot website. There are pics of the jig, my cutting files to download (might make translation to G code easier). I also have built, and am using now a 5/8 bit that allow more aggresive cutting.

Heres a link to my column: http://www.shopbottools.com/garysmusings.htm#Dovetail

If you want more info or the 5/8 file, email to islaww(at)comcast.net put dovetail in the subject line to get thru the spam filters.

Very kind of you to post Gary!!
I am going to try to start making a jig fixture this week!!
I have a PC jig did you model the workings of the jig from that?

Thanks
Nick

Nick...
Yes, the cutting files were modeled after the geometry of the PC. In the article on the SB website, there is a link to the PC jig directions on the Rockler website that will allow you cut a number of other joints.

Since I programmed this with the flexibility of SB programming alngusge, I was able to add many variables and build in adjustments. I am not sure what,if any, of this could transfer over to G-Code.

Fascinating discussion and very helpful. For what it is worth I have developed an Excel spreadsheet that produces G-Code for Through Dovetails. You put in the angle and size of the bits, number and spacing of the dovetails, size of the material and it figures all the geometry of the cuts and produces the parameters for a Mach3/G-Code program I wrote. Works pretty slick. The Excel G-code can be copied directly into the Mach3 program and machined. I will be glad to share both the spreadsheet and G-Code program with any who are interested.
