Scaling text depths

Post by WNC_Ed »

Had my best friend visit yesterday. He has a sawmill service down in SW Florida. I have been interested in the saw mill work he does and he has been curious about the CNC.
So, yesterday I whipped up a file to make him a sign for his shop so he could see the whole CNC process from start to finish.
I am fairly happy with the results, I am pretty sure he was since I offered to finish it and UPS it to him - He said "No, I am taking it". LOL

16"x16"x.75" in oak - walnut danish oil finish - one quick coat, didn't have time to do more.

I noticed that when all was done the smaller letters looked to be carved too deep. Checked the depth, just to make sure and all the letters were the same depth - roughly 3/16".
I am sure the overall appearance would be better if the smaller letters were shallower cut. Is there a good rule of thumb for scaling text depth to letter size on the same project?

Looks good Ed. My guess would be put a flat depth on the smaller letters. Thanks for sharing.

0.045 - 0.075 max depth for small fonts is our standard cutting depth for small graphics.

Hope that helps

With a one shot and done it can be difficult to get things exactly the way you want them. I think you done good.

It looks like you used a single line font, and use a profile-on technique?

Most of the text I do is v-carved, with a flat depth set to .03 to .05, but everything I do is quit small. When I do a larger sign, I set the flat depth to 1/8 of an inch, but with smaller lettering it hardly ever gets that deep, so it is somewhat self adjusting.
