Wood gear clock in Bamboo

Wood gear clock in Bamboo ply with electronic pendulum drive
This clock is inspired by Clayton Boyles "Toucan", but i have redesigned the layout, the shfts and bearings. The gears are cut with the Gear gadget. I have drawn a composote toolpath with layers for each component. Dick Bipes of Carveshop.com supplied the innovative electronic pendulum drive, and the clock keeps near perfect time! The double pawl ratchet is my design, and allows for the variation in pendulum swing from teh electronic time adjustment.

Nicely done. Designing that is certainly beyond my attention span...

Nicely done. I’ve cut numerous items using Clayton’s plans. His designs are amazing.

I bookmarked his website with the intention of making one or two of his robotic creations.

Vectric Interview wrote:Coping with a variable amplitude swing of the pendulum which drives the ratchet is a problem. Dick Bipes designed a clever cam mechanism which was too challenging for me. I designed a dual pawl system to drive the ratchet wheel, but it is rather difficult to describe it here.
Do you have a description of your dual pawl system? I'm designing something similar and this is the very problem I'm trying to solve at the moment. Bipes has a couple intriguing solutions (edit: this video shows the one that's perhaps the most interesting and easiest to understand), but I haven't found your solution described anywhere.

Thanks, that looks great and I appreciate the link to the drive electronics. That may finally allow me to finish my planetary gear clock that has been sitting on the shelf unfinished for 3 years...
It would also use a dual pawl but needs a 2-second pendulum. I am not sure if that would work with the 1-second drive electronics wasting every other drive pulse. I will ask the seller or just try it.

This is a 2-stage differential planetary gear set (or Wolfrom Gear) with a 1:30 and 1:12 ratio. It is self-supported without any axles or bearings.

Thanks, that may be possible sometimes but for now let me first prove that I can get that thing to work....
One disadvantage of the planetary gears (without planet wheel carrier) is that they must be super precise or they either rattle or they bind.
That is difficult to achieve with wooden gears and the traditionally involute geared clocks are much more forgiving.

Anthony, I would love a copy. I like the idea of having no weights to contend with, Thanks... Henri Monnier
