House Sign

Well, I finally finished it. The wood is Cherry and the final size is 15" by 24" by .875" thick. Not the best choice of wood for an outdoor sign but it was on sale. I figured several coats of shellac and 3 coats of urethane should make it durable enough for a life on the porch. After carving the base sign I sprayed on 3 coats of shellac and then applied Oracle 631 masking film to v-carve the lettering with a flat bottom of .15" then sprayed it black. I think it turned out pretty good.

FWIW I recently tried General Finishes Exterior 450 water based topcoat. It sprays nicely and put on a nice finish. It claims great outdoor durability and UV protection. I'll let you know in a few years about the durability aspect...

Very well done Steve!
Grain matching is virtually seamless :)
Hope they keep up maintenance for many enjoyable years:)

General Finishes Exterior 450 when applied to bare mahogany will last exactly 8 months in the sunny southern California weather, not happy with it at all.
