Inlaid oval boxes

Post by laflippin »

2 boxes.JPG

Hi Friends, I was able to give my new Axiom AR8 Pro+ and Aspire software a good work-out during the holiday season and thought I'd show off a couple of the early results. First, I broke a 4" long, 1/4"-shank end mill trying to carve the boxes shown in the picture from a 1 3/4" thick piece of fir. So, I bought some 1/2" shank EMs with a long cutting length and got back to it. Those bad boys carved out the oval boxes without flinching. :P

The lids were inlaid with purpleheart and walnut using Zank V-Inlay Procedure (Zank VIP) techniques.

Hi Scott, I used a 60 deg, 1/4"-shank Yonico bit for that project.

Thanks!
60 degree Onsrud engraving(with .005 flat) was what I used years ago.
Thinking of trying same bit with with a 30 degree angle next time.............
SOMEWHERE I saw a flowering twig/vine VIP with multi woods and white flower petals, and been sticking in my brain's "to do" list.
Was that perchance one of yours?
Mine would just be small...so thinking fine details would survive final sanding better.....never did hear back much from the guys who were going to try 30 degrees:(
May have to buy a 45? Don't have that Onsrud yet...good excuse to buy an interim angle bit :)
Haven't gotten into solid boxes yet...NICE JOB:)

Thanks again, Scott, and all, your words are music to my computer screen! The white-petal flower vine isn't one of mine, but you know the usual suspects at this site...there are a lot of 'em!

Thanks laflippin....Guess I'll do it the old fashioned way and Search:)
Hope you don't mind, BUT is had an Oriental type delicacy I liked, and even had Genus/Species(?)stated)in case poster looks at this thread.
TOLD Paul about a month ago I liked your Name idea....BUT didn't think I could call him by just his last name after all the help he gave me......I couldn't :D
My boxes will have to be shallow or just Small:)
Hope the people appreciated them!!
