Temple podium

We completed and installed this podium at Temple Shalom in Scotch Plains, NJ today. It features a 48" wide leather surface to unroll the Torah, veneered and inlaid finish, a pull-out step so children and smaller adults can be seen when reading, and pull-out wings so that temple elders can rest their Torahs during special services. The wood is maple, walnut and cherry. Kudos to my son, Drew, who managed to turn my cutouts and drawings into reality!

We used Aspire to cut out the basic shapes and to do the inlaid lettering on the front. The architect provided me with a rough design, which I turned into construction drawings. The design was laid out in Sketchup first, which generated the shapes, then imported into Aspire. Those with sharp eyes will notice that it is asymmetric - the triangles are not centered on each other, and there are very few right angles in it. This was the architect's idea - when we protested that people would think we made it wrong, he insisted on it because "nothing in this world is perfect"!

Great job Steve. And don't worry about the asymmetrical issue part of the Jewish religion is nothing is perfect that's one reason the Mezuzahs is rarely hung straight on a door jam.

I did a logo for an Air Force Podium awhile back. I didn't make the podium, just the logo. Yours really turned out great.
