500 year old hammered-copper atlas found in ancient bombed-out stone barn near Normandy?

No, not really. I just tried to make it look like that.

Carved from pine project board. I held it down in the center with masking tape/super glue, allowing the edges to rise during carving to create the eaten-away-at-the-edges look. Sealed with shellac. Sculpt Nouveau copper B, light green patina, and Age-It complete the fakery.

Should I frame it, or leave it mounted as-is?

That’s really cool! You could mount as-is or make some kind of unique frame with perhaps some stand-offs in the back of the plaque to “elevate” it from the flat/solid portion of the frame background.

If I had that in my possession, I would not be able to resist putting on some dark wax (brown or black shoe polish perhaps). I would apply it lightly, then wipe/buff it “all” off to enhance detail and yield a further “aged” effect.

I see it as..
Very ornate gold frame....
Dark velvet background....
Map standing off of the velvet...
LED lights behind the carving,,,,,a subtle glow......

OOH...AAH !

Being myself a 16th century French relic, I appreciate.

Clever trick. But it's not fair kidding other users who fight against warping :D
Best regards

I like it. What bit did you use and how long did it take to cut it?

Thank you for the suggestions. The piece is about 22” x 34”. It took about 13 hours to carve with an 1/8” BN. I bought the model on eBay for about $2.00.

For now anyway, I chose a simple modern frame for contrast. I did Michael Tyler’s suggestion of black shoe polish. I am very happy with the way it enhances the color contrast and the aged effect. Best of all, my wife likes it!
