Mahogany Gate
I used Aspire to create the sculptured part of this solid mahogany gate. For the coral and fishes, I purchased the Design and Make 3D models. I modeled the mermaid myself. The mermaid is the symbol for our city and I have used the same model in different projects in my house scaling it to whatever project I am working on.
This was my first two sided project and the sculpture you see is version 3.0. The first version came out a bit thin and fragile. For the second version, I increased the base height by a decent amount. I edited the design a few times and forgot to copy one of the edits to the other side so it came out flat when I machined it. I figured it out for version 3 and it turned out nice.
The gate is designed so that I can replace the sculpture if needed. The arch is fastened to the stiles using Festool domino connectors and the sculpture is held in place with a tenon that runs around the edge.

Very Nice work. Gives me inspiration for a pool gate I am getting ready to build myself. Thanks for sharing.

For the base coat, I brushed on clear penetrating epoxy sealer. I followed that up with spraying 2 coats of Waterlox marine sealer and 2 coats of Waterlox marine finish.highpockets wrote:Beautiful work!!!

Re: Mahogany Gate
Hey Steve!
This is great - love your mermaid model and how you've constructed it all together!
I think it's very clever of you to make the sculpture part interchangeable - very cool!
And finally I love your will to not give up! Haha!
