Another day, more doors

Post by dealguy11 »

Here's a day's production of a more complicated MDF door than the one I showed last time. This profile is a copy of a proprietary profile that this customer has used for years, and has to match his specs closely (so no cheating with v-cut corners!) Each of these doors requires 8 different tools to produce, including 2 separate moulding toolpaths with different sized ballnose bits. It goes faster to use shaped tools wherever possible and moulding toolpaths where the shaped tools can't reach. These doors are 1 inch thick and the profile is cut 5/8" into the panel. The panel profile is so wide and deep that it isn't practical to try to cut it with a custom form tool, because the tool would cut into the profile on the rails and stiles. The moulding toolpath makes it possible to cut the bottom profile shape with a standard ballnose bit. I also use the moulding toolpath to clean up the sharp inside corners. This takes more time than just letting them be rounded, but the advantage is when they're painted they're hard to tell from a standard 5-piece door.

Nice work Steve, looks like the moulding toolpath has come in handy for this project! :)
