I got the privilege to make a rope making machine. This was to give visitors to a historical recreation site some hands on interaction. It rather amused me to be making some medieval technology using a cnc machine.
The machine consists of a ring gear that is rotated around three inner spur gears. The spur gears rotate in place and the attached hooks twist the twine. When the individual groups of twine are all twisted, then the three groups are twisted together. The ends are kept from unraveling by taping or whipping.
The museum curator got to operate the crank on the first rope.

That's cool. If I'm not mistaken they had an episode of How It's Made where the company made ropes using that twist system. Thanks for sharing.

We had one made out of cast iron when I was young and I helped Dad make ropes from bailer twine several times. Could you possibly post the files for this? I would like to make one and try making rope again.

Great memories of when I was an apprentice in Chatham Dockyard (UK) where there was and still is a Ropery. A building over 1100 feet long!

If anybody is planning a visit to England I can highly recommend this place.
Any pictures of the workings of your machine and the finished rope?
