Week 2 Project Of The Week

Post by dwilli9013 »

Week 2 project in an ongoing series.
Family Crest made for an old friend.
Material Purple Heart 7/8 thick 12' wide x 14" high.
Crest model from Design and Make. Added Horseshoes and lettering. Celtic weave from Aspire clip art. Modified the crest a bit to get rid of some areas that did not work for my vision.
Roughing pass with 1/4 EM climb
Finishing pass with .0625 tapered ball mill 6% step over. Which unfortunately turned this into a 30 hour carve. Had no idea just how hard Purple Heart was. Ended up breaking a bit at 85% complete.
Had to pare down the NC code to slash the cut file down and change the orientation of my raster. Also had to go with a 1/16 tapered ball nose as that was what I had on hand. Finished it out 6 hours later.
The picture is not totally complete as I have to light sand down the sealer and apply 1 more coat and buff.
Found out the hard way that your branding iron needs to be blazing hot in order to brand Purple Heart correctly. If to cool the iron will just smear.
Beautiful beautiful wood. So much so that my wife now insists that she have a jewelry box made out of this.
Thanks for looking.

Excellent Dwayne!
Wait until the color peaks in a few days:)
Careful with any machine buffing...heat will change it almost black.

I've learned my lesson well. You can't please everyone,so you have to please yourself
