Simply wiped gel stain on, brushed stain into letters, wiped off flat surface and let the remaining gel in the letters dry before applying clear finish.

Reduce your stepover. Try 8% or less.

For your letters: Tell your machine to "Go To Zero," drop Z by .002", re-zero Z, carve a second time.
