Almost Paradise Box

Post by davemartin88 »

Another variation on the great Paradise Box design. This one is a music box and about 1/2 the size of the original design. Cherry wood, 1/2" thick, shellac finish. Tune is "Irish Eyes Are Smiling ". After the photo was taken, I added a divider next to the music movement.

Very clever adaptation, Dave! Excellent work!

Can you share more about the music box - where it was sourced, any tips/hints for installing it?

This box uses an inexpensive 18 note movement that mounts easily with the winding handle through the bottom of the box. These movements seem to be pretty standard and sound well enough to get the point across. Sankyo is one brand that gets good reviews. Here's a link on Amazon:

Amazon also sells a brass plunger to switch the box on when the lid is lifted off. Around $10 for both parts but bet they can be found a bit cheaper.

After drilling a small hole in the bottom for the winder to go through, I used a larger drill bit to decrease the thickness of the wood to 1/4" to accommodate the length of the stem and size of the winder. Was going to do the bottom holes on the CNC but sometimes it is just easier to use a drill. The switch attaches to the movement and a short piece of brass wire is secured through a hole in a small wood bracket in the corner of the box so it springs up when the box lid is lifted off. I thought about using a hinged lid but a lid with shallow rabbets to keep it in place was more simple.

Thanks for looking and providing the original design for this box, hope this helps anyone interested.
