This is a gift for a friend on her birthday. I decided to try Michael’s box in Corian.
Due to possible problems with hinges, I decided to make a fitted lid by pocketing a 5-mm recess on the bottom of the lid for a snug fit.
Copied from members that made a tray for the Paradise Box, I made small tray also out of Corian.

Stunning and a more fitting use for Corian cannot be found. I sure it was well received. Thanks for sharing.

I really like the way it came out, just beautiful. How did you stain/color it and with what? I have some black corian I need to do something with. Didn't want to just dump some contrasting paint in the carvings.

The colour is simply black paint from a rattle can. The advantage of Corian is that there is no bleeding and the excess is easily removed by lacquer thinners

Another way to remove excess paint with corian is to paint the whole thing with color of choice then scrape off the excess with a credit card type card.
This removes most paint where its not wanted but of course anything engraved remains painted.
When dry, simply use an orbital or mouse sander [light grit, 120 or so] to remove from all areas not engraved - I follow this up with a matte clear coat which really makes the whole thing pop.

What a brilliant idea I never considered that. I will try that next time. To be honest if one over-spray, removing the excess paint with thinners can create quite a mess.

I have worked with Corian before, best way to get rid of over spay I found was to use 1200 wet/dry sand paper. I just run water over it in the sink while I sand . if you talk to kitchen guys they will tell you its the best way to remove scratches and bring back the shine.

Man, I love that box the way you did it in the Corian and the paint-fill contrast! Beautiful, beautiful!

I totally agree with you Michael, this is a very fine use for Corian. Very well done Jozua.

When I used it to make the Lady in the Woods carving that you saw at the McGrews Aspire Camp two years ago, I used dark gel stain, then wiped the surface with a little paint thinner on a folded paper towel, lightly wiping the surface until the surface was clean again. You get sharp edges that way, and the original slick finish on the Corian is not harmed at all. It also works with paint, but in both cases it uses a lot of paper towels. The folded paper should be lightly dampened and turned often. With practice you will get a feel for just how damp is best.

I have dark gel stain but was not sure that it will work Corian, I only use it for wood products. Thank you this is good to know. This will almost force me to make another one just to practice the new paint techniques.

Here is a photo link to the carving I mentioned. You can see the fine details that are possible. Where cleaning did not bring out all of the little points in the details it is a simple matter to use fine sandpaper to lightly (and selectively) sand the points enough to make them white so they stand out. Do this after the gel stain or paint has dried, and blow off the dust. I used a final light overcoat of clear polyurethane afterwards to seal the gel stain.
