It's when you make acrylic letters that have a flange on the bottom that goes through an opaque sign substrate.
Use the flange to mount to the back side.
You can make the acrylic letters two ways.
This job we took .5" acrylic and milled down .375" around all the letters so we could install all the letters as one piece.
You can also use two layers of acrylic and bond the cut letters to a piece you are using and a flange.
Goal is to have the letter stick out further than the face, this sign they stick out about .25"
