Here is a project we've been working on. A base for a sign project. Made with Eps foam and hard coated.

Looks great! What brand hardcoat are you spraying?

This is our first project with a hard coat, we used an exterior hardcoat from Hot Wire Factory. It's pretty hard.
Our next time I am going to add some of their additives to make it even harder.

Wow! Thanks for the link. That's about the lowest pricing on a foam hard coat I've ever seen. I'll have to try some of that!

That's really cool. I'm curious about the choice of foam for this base rather than brick and concrete. Was there a significant cost difference? Was there a weight concern?

Typically we farm out our Foam Monument signs and love them.
This time our quote for this project seamed a little high and I knew I could do it in the shop and wanted to try to make some of them in our shop vs having to send them out.
Our hard coat is not as strong as the vendor we use, but there are some other additives to make this one stronger for the next project.

Costs:
$100 in foam
$120 in hard coat
$80 in paints
$40 in adhesives
Plus time making it

Advantages for us with foam:
This does not require a complete footer under it like a real brick would require. We only need to do two posts, direct burial, to install.
We don't have to subcontract to a mason to build the base and have to wait on their lead time and build time to finish the project.
We have a generic architect stamped drawing made to use for all our foam monument signs with approved footing for the county. If it was brick & mortar I would need an architect stamped engineered drawing made for our project.
We can install in one day on the foam signs.

Hello Brian, thanks for posting your good looking foam base. (It looks like you have lots of good looking signs in your shop. )

Steve, this may not apply to Brian's foam base, but I read about a similar base and sign welcoming someone to a local community. The article said that the base was made of foam to reduce the municipality's liability should someone drive off the street and hit the monument base.

Well, that's an interesting concept! You would think that a concrete base would be "an innocent bystander" in any case if a car hits it!

The so-called liability of someone hitting a stationary object gets funnier the more I think about it!

"Yes, Your Honor, I did hit the monument base while I was texting my girlfriend. But look at the damage that it caused to my car! It's the city's fault for not making the base out of foam!"
