These guitars are made as Christmas gifts for two of my great nephews (brothers, 6 and 10 years old). Their dad plays guitar, but nothing like these.
The neck is 1 by 2 red oak with 1/4" thick figured padauk fret boards. The fret markers are small metal decorative beads recessed flush with the fret
board surface.Tuning length is 21". The body is an 8" diameter bamboo salad bowl from IKEA with the bottoms cut off and 1/8" thick bubinga on each
side of a bocote strip glued onto the bottom. The tuners are from a Grover six string set. The top panel is 1/8" thick polished aluminum diamond plate
held on with brass round head wood screws. The bridge is a 10-32 x 2" brass bolt and nuts. The bottle cap is from a Sioux City root beer bottle. The
knob came with the C. B. Gitty piezo pickup kit that is installed into the top panel. The shiny copper penny is a 2017 "P" issue that is a one time
commemorative edition. (Their "Lucky Penney") The strings are tuned to open GBE using 0.026", 0.017", and 0.008" strings to keep the string tension
within a reasonable range. The top panel can be removed intact with all connections.
The sustain is very good. Much better than I expected for these small bowls. The guitars have fairly good volume and can be played with no
amplification for practice playing. With a 25 watt amp it's the real deal ...

Re: Small bamboo salad bowl guitars = Christmas gifts
Thanks Scott. There are at least two more guitars to be made soon. The next one is a Christmas gift for another great nephew. Then a really weird one for myself.

Re: Small bamboo salad bowl guitars = Christmas gifts
Thanks for sharing these, great work! I'm helping a friend with some components for instruments that he makes and will show him this thread as he too makes most of his instruments from repurposed items like boxes, gourds, and vegetable steamers. These will be great gifts. I'm always amazed at the sound that comes from instruments like these that goes well beyond the neat novelty effect you see at first look. Thanks again.

Re: Small bamboo salad bowl guitars = Christmas gifts
Thanks Dave.
Yesterday I used my CNC machine to cut three 3/8" holes and a rectangular hole in a small cigar box and installed a Psycho Box pre-wired kit. This adds four levels of distortion to the guitars. It goes between the guitar and the amplifier. It requires a 9v flat battery. It doesn't include an on/off switch but I'll add one soon. The laser cut plywood comes with the kit. The kit is from http://www.cbgitty.com.
