Corbel Help Needed

Post by ehaney »

I need to cut (6) corbels (pdf attached) for a headboard project but I'm stuck and could you use some help. The sides are plain so only need to machine the top. I would appreciate any direction on how an experienced user would go about designing and tool pathing. I have experimented with two rail sweep and creating shapes by watching the tutorials but have come up empty handed. I have Aspire 4.5 and a ShopBot Buddy. Thanks in advance for any help, Eric

Is the shallow pyramid concave or convex? Also does it have to be a rectangle or can it be a square?

That looks great!, although I think I told you wrong. The top of the pyramid wants to be in a flush plane of the top of the part and then the pyramid sides go into the part a shallow depth. Everything else is exactly what I am looking for. I really appreciate your help and if you can help direct me to how you accomplished this, I would be very grateful! Thanks again, Eric

Not sure what you mean " The top of the pyramid wants to be in a flush plane of the top of the part and then the pyramid sides go into the part a shallow depth", but this should get you started.

I used Molding Toolpaths for both the pyramid and the tapered bottom part. To create the flutes I previewed the pyramid, tapered bottom part and profile cut and removed the scrap. I then used the "Create component from toolpath preview" this allowed the use of the Project toolpath onto 3D model option of the fluted toolpath.

Hope this helps.....

Thank you for your help! I'm unable to open your file because I have an older version of Aspire, v 4.5. I should upgrade!!! But I'll try to use your good description to try to replicate. Thanks again for your help! Eric

John,

You made a concave pyramid.

He wanted a ConVEX pyramid - tip is higher than base

You're right Leo, I miss read his response to my question

I'm not sure how to help though, I don't have Aspire 4.5 and have no idea what tools it has.

John I don't think 4.5 has the moulding toolpath & not sure there is any other way for you to help since there is no model to export as stl

I think you're right about not being to help with 4.5. That was way before my time so I have no idea what tools are available. However if Eric likes the corbel as is then I can create an STL. :) :) :)

I was going to say you won't be able to do that because the moulding toolpath doesn't create a component that you can export but I am guessing you are going to create a model using the toolpath preview or something like that rather than the modeling tools such as 2 rail sweep

Martin, that is the plan. I don't plan on starting over with a 2 rail sweep, I don't even know if 4.5 has the 2 rail sweep.....
