Large Sign Foam Carving

Post by Dave Dugdale »

I was commissioned to model and carve this piece for a Buddhist Center here in Vermont. It is being test hung in this photo. It will be removed and gilded in gold leaf before rehanging. The modelling and carving were both done in Aspire. The piece is 8 feet in Diameter and 3" thick.

That is impressive! Would like to see the final results when it is re-hung. 8' x 3" thick. How long did that take to do the rough and then the final?

Thanks for the compliments. I'll try to get a picture and post it once it is gilded.
My CNC has a 4' x 8' bed, so I had to do the carve in 3 pieces. All together I had a good solid week (40 hours+) into the carving.
The next one should go a little faster because I have learned a few things that will speed it up.

Thanks for looking,
Dave Dugdale

Nice work! That's a lot of gilding - must have gone through many booklets of gold foil!

Are you using 15# or 20# corafoam?

The customer did the gilding, so I don't know how much gold it took. I cut it out of 15# HDU, but I did use a 1/2" MDO backer board on it.
