Escher Treasure Box

Post by Mike-S »

A treasure box for my grand daughter.
Base is two 4/4's maple glued up and pocket cut with a 1/2" BN. Profiled with a 1/4" x 4" Burchett bit. Magnetic catch.
Top is poplar. Lizards are walnut, bloodwood, and Corian with magnets imbedded in the backside.
Finish is Rustoleum's new Triple Thick Gloss Poly.

Great job Mike. Your grand daughter is going to be thrilled.

I like the mix of woods and the inlay work on the lizards, plus they are removable!!!

Thanks for sharing.

Very nice, Mike. I'm curious as to why you refer to it as an Escher Treasure Box.

Very Nice Mike, as others have said sure you will have a very happy customer

Phil, the reference is to M.C. Escher, that lizard is one of his designs.

The Escher term refers to the lizards on top of the box. They are formed to be interlocking. It's really very cool & adds an optical illusion effect. I've seen some that will make entire panels of these. It occupies hours of time for little ones forming different shapes.

Thanks for the answer to my "Escher" question. I've seen many examples of his work in interlocking panels. I've just never seen his work done with an individual piece.

This is a slightly larger version. This file will work with a .155 EM. If you change bit size or object size, you may need to tweak vectors for a good interlock.
