firefighter companion piece in brass

Post by nicksilva »

this is a companion piece to the firefighter I put up last month with the resulting embossing. 3" piece of brass for a wallet back plate.
don't worry, those tool marks are 0.15" below the surface so they won't show up on the leather as you can see.

Thanks to some help from Nicksilva, I made my first embossing brass plate.

Made this for a friend of mine that does leather work as a hobby.

John,

Sorry for the what is probably an obvious answer, but... what is the embossing process after you have your plate made?

Thanks

Nick can answer this better, he told me. It's pretty simple, first use an unfinished piece of leather, wet it (doesn't have to be soaking). I used a block with a piece of rubber as a backing board and sandwiched the leather between the backer board and stencil. I then put the sandwich in a vice, you don't have go nuts cranking down on the vice, it really doesn't take much pressure.
