Inlay with a twist

Post by Old Silver Fox »

I was recently looking at some fossils and wondered about doing something similar in wood, I have seen some very well done fossil inlays using contrasting wood that are machined flat but I wanted to have the ‘bones’ left raised above the surface, also to have them look ‘boney’ so I used a white plastic panel that is normally used for cladding which is 10mm thick and has a smooth skin but a coarse middle section.

I used the normal V Carve inlay technique to cut into the base wood to form a good key for the glue as there would not be much surface area in places when I machined the ‘bones’ I then machined the underside of the plastic to mirror the wood and glued the parts together.
The following day I machined a 3D profile over the glued on face to leave the ‘bones’ proud of the wood, a bit of clean up to remove the fuzzes and a quick coat of lacquer to seal the faces.

Hope you like
