Owl pen holder
Haven't posted too much lately too much time elsewhere between outgoing and incoming flights
Remember Michael Tyler's owl pencil holder at the 2016 UGM?
I was suppose to make one, a work in progress, but since my wife is going to retire at the end of this year I am running out of time so I made a quick-er version, now sitting on her desk.
Owl, Moose, and Santa with flying deer from MakeCNC
I modified them as necessary for size and/or to mount to the base, added pen holders, and a new rudolph Moose required a complete redesign to make it much smaller Some of these will be heading to the family July reunion in Idaho, some completed and some as puzzles
Paul & Julie idea at MakeCNC, I make'em work Ever expanding winter and whirl flowers, spring has sprung or should I say 'is spinning' If the wind ever quits I must spray weeds.... lots of rain... lots of weeds

Re: Owl pen holder
Is that your own overall design Dale or something you have seen somewhere ?
How much (if any) was done on the CNC ? Looking at them I am guessing a lot of it was a job for the laser

Re: Owl pen holder
Neat steam engine! But if it is to be like the real ones, the wheels on opposite sides should be offset by 90 degrees so it never has the connecting rods horizontal on both sides at the same time.
Good judgement comes from experience.

Re: Owl pen holder
Mike, guess I should have done a bit more research .
Since the axles are square inside a wood bearing turning them 90 degrees is easy. A little xylene to release the drop of super glue and there you are 90 degrees Yes they are all laser but still created/modified in Aspire
I still do cnc too, lately, mostly lithophanes which are then labeled with the laser
Dale
PS Michael will you be at the AWFS?

Assuming you were asking me about AWFS, I'm not currently planning on attending this year (unless something major changes my mind!).

Re: Owl pen holder
Nice.
Are the designs yours or from the web? If from the web, I know my grandson would like the steam engine if you could point me in the right direction.
I have access to a laser at our local SLO MakerSpace and it gets a lot of use. To help eliminate the soot build up on the bottom of my cuts, I use some Elmers spray adhesive on typing paper and stick that to the bottom of the material I'm cutting. Gets rid of most of the smoke. Light sanding removes any glue residue.

Rich, Drawings are available at a reasonable cost from:
http://www.MakeCNC.com
They are a combination of their work and my revisions/additions... I beta test many of the projects for Paul & Julie to keep my old brain working
Yes Michael T that is what I meant... Deb & I will be there for the first time this year. We already have tickets, plane reservations, and hotel booked. We were hoping we might see you again. Perhaps another UGM?

Thanks, Dale. I will be at the Vectric User Group this year, for sure. I hope to see you and Debbie there if you two can make it!

Re: Owl pen holder
More about laser smoke... I make a lot of two sided engraved projects on the epilog laser. Previously I suggested using automotive lacquer to make it easier to remove the smoke with ordinary window cleaner.
While this solves one problem it creates another, engraving isn't as good.
Since most of the unwanted smoke is created by the cutting process I tried a different approach with satisfactory success.
I now engrave both sides then coat with automotive lacquer before cutting. All double sided parts are centered on the page [f9 Aspire] [P in Corel Draw X6 & X8]
Layers are used for the vector and raster cuts.
Cutting and engraving steps:
1. cut a short vertical line at the exact center at the top of the sheet [this is the guide line when the part is flipped over]
2. engrave the back side
3. flip it over and engrave the front
4. remove from the machine and coat with automotive acrylic lacquer
5. place back in the machine [after lacquer has completely dried] front side up, and cut
6. remove excess smoke with cotton rag and window cleaner with amonia
To visually verify the parts are in alignment I open all the layers for each side in Corel then set the laser to only make raster and/or vector cuts at the appropriate time.
Hope this helps,
Dale
