Compass Rose

A new customer from Ohio wanted a Compass Rose inlayed into a maple table top and the letters N, E, S and W in the stool seats.
I used Paul Z inlay ideas as I have many times, used a 60 deg V-bit and .25 End Mill for clean out.
Hope the customer is as pleased as I'm with the finished project.

Absolutely GORGEOUS!! A piece of my brain is saying "There's no Way that is flat!"
How did you accomplish the shadow effect If I may ask?
I've never done inlay before this, and can't quite grasp it from the picture, but I can definitely smell smoke from the old grey matter as it shifts pieces of wood around in my head.
If the customer isn't satisfied----Get better customers

That is really great. How did you get such clean lines on the multicoloured inlays? Did you cut them all at once (female side) or did you do three completely separate inlays?

Beautiful work. I have been thinking of this for our sailboat's table ... seeing your work, I don't think the melamine back piece is going to cut it! It probably wouldn't groove very well anyway ...

As stated the table top and stool seats are hard maple, the circle is bloodwood, then butternut and walnut were use for the arrows. The four pockets for the circle were cut the same day and the bloodwood inlay was glued into place and set over night. After that only two pockets were out each day and the inlay glued into place to set over night. Each morning I would mill down the excess stock too .020" above the top. Never did I router out two pockets that were next to each other, I could see major issues if that was done.
Female Pockets were cut using a .25 flat end mill and a 60 deg v-bit, settings were .250" in depth, for the Male inlays, using the same bits settings were, Start Depth of .100" and Flat Depth of .200" This will leave you approx. .050" before the piece bottoms out in the pocket. Then after the glue is setup you mill off the .100" excess stock.

I will attach the crv. file Note the circle inlays will need to be done first because they over lay into the the arrow pockets, I did this to insure a nice tight fit.
