Diamond scribe

Post by Mike-S »

I've been using a spring loaded scribe chucked in the router for a number of years, but decided to try something different.
This is a piece of Lexan that clamps around the router where the DC bracket would normally be. It's bent to keep the collet clear of any material clamps. A Dremel 1/8" diamond tip is imbedded into the end of the arm. The arm has just enough flex so the scribe can follow a slightly irregular surface. Pressure on the tip is set by selecting a depth--0.01 to 0.03" has worked well.
The DVD is sitting in a milled pocket with cam clamps.
The lighted signs are reverse engraved on the plexi.

The only problem is the recording media is what your engraving.

The "rainbow" side is where the data is recorded. I'm engraving the "label" side.

No the label side is the data side. Bend a cd or dvr till it breaks and that layer will come off.

I respectfully disagree. Doesn't make much sense to try to record data on top of a silk screen painted label. On the rainbow side you can actually see where data has been recorded. The unrecorded area is a subtle shade different.

I'm scratching the red layer. All the data transfer takes place on the bottom.

It's on the back side of the label material. But you will find out when you scribe over a recorded area.

This might help, but you are playing with fire etching on the "printable" area of a CD.

Well, I guess I'm still missing the key point. Don't see how scratching the top layer affects the reflective layer.

Mike,
This looks like a really slick alternative to a diamond drag bit!
I've got to try it, or something like it.

The label side of most optically recorable discs is usually just a very thin coating
of lacquer. Some markers with high volatility solvents can even seep through
and harm the data layer. Any scratching on that layer will damage the recording layer
beneath. Most discs these days do not have that extra polycarbonate layer on the top side only
the bottom.

OK, got it. Thanks Don and Domino.

Bob, below are pics of scribe, hope it helps. The two screws in the top butt up against the drop plate to prevent axial movement.

Mike,

I think it's an excellent alternative to a expensive diamond scribe for people like me who don't do engraving all the time.

Great idea....For those concerned about damaging the CD, don't do it. It's that simple.

Thanks for sharing!
