I have poor luck uploading images to this forum.. For the intermediate stage images you'll have to look at my Picasa folder..

https://picasaweb.google.com/1180226087 ... directlink

Unfortunately, the sign was for a buddy so I charged a fraction of what it was worth.. The process (I'm guessing 40 hours with design work) goes something like...
  • Carve the Parrot out of oak.. Kinda proud of this one as I created the model myself from a photo
  • Carve the 'Drunken Parrot' letters out of 1/4 Baltic Birch.. It took a bit of playing with the depth if the letter pocket so that the grain of the interior layer matches the top grain
  • It's hard to see but there is a second set of pseudo-letters that I used to pocket pattern from the top of the letters as an outline for a second set. This was glued to the back of the letters as a 1/4" standoff which nicely made room for the parrot tail and barrel border.
  • I tried to mimic the end of a barrel by gluing a bunch of 1/4 oak strips to a plywood back then cut the oval background.
  • V-Carved the 'The', 'Bar' and swirly out of the oak background.
  • The most tedious point was cutting the 12 end-grain oak border pieces to wrap the oak background.. The goal of this was to look like barrel staves and I missed a bit but still looked good. Each of the 12 pieces was a separate program and cut to work around the parrot. Ugh
  • Paid my artist daughter to paint the parrot with a Hawaiian shirt image we took off the web.. She did a really good job getting the perspective correct on all the shirt parts.. Up close the parrot is an awesome sign in itself
  • Unfortunately we were late getting it done so the only good photo of the sign up close was before I put the thing in it's CNC crate!
Even worse was the fact that his wife wanted a sign too so a year later I had to create a Horny Mermaid Martini Lounge sign as well..

Here is the link to the second sign I did like this..

Nearly the exact same process but I made a mistake somewhere and the thing got about 20% larger.. (oops)
