Starwars corian lithophane display box

Post by dldecker »

A lazy susan base that rotates around the fixed led light

.22 is the starting thickness of the corian lithophane

the models are cut .1 thick with .02 material left below the models (.02 is the least amount of thickness which shows up the brightest white )

each lithophane took around 4 hours to cut with a 1/32 tapered ballnose

I use super glue gel to glue the sides box and have had very good luck with it.

Made it for my nephews 40th birthday present

This is my guess.
Cameras turn a quasi 3d image into a 2d image making them very difficult to photograph as they actually look to the eye. Because the eye can see 3d the lithophanes look really good.
The only way I know of to fully represent a lithophane as a photo is to Photoshop it, increasing the contrast.... you can get close to what the eye sees but it is still only a 2d immage.
Putting the lithophane in a very bright window and blocking out the light around the lithophane will also produce a better photo.
The other is when using a larger bit the scene tends to pixelate, similar to a bitmap. Even using a 1/16" [1.5mm] bit the pixelating is visible but not enough to detract from the finished lithophane.

These are unretouched photo taken facing NW with the sun in the afternoon [W-SW] sky.
The second one was from a scanned black and white photo of very high contrast and 1200 dpi scan resolution

This one was Photoshopped [the corian is green] the photo was digital color

thats just background noise from the air cleaner, air conditioning, fans and other tools running.

I did not mean to record any sound. I do not use sound on my computer. I had to plug in my speakers to hear it.

If this was put on a motorized turntable, is would add to it's uniqueness. Although most of them are rather expensive, I seen an 8" one at Sears for around $30.

I think the bit used makes a big difference in how well they photograph. This is a photo straight from the camera, other than conversion from raw to jpg and resizing, and it looks pretty close to what you see in person.

The starwars box looks great. I have had trouble with gluing panels together in the past but may need to give it another try.

I think dhellew2 was talking about the noise in the picture itself.
