SOA 3d

Post by Xxray »

Here is a rendering of the sons of anarchy reaper.
Is about 12x10" done out of .75 poplar, took about 4 hours to cut with a 1/32 tapered ball nose. Don't know how well it shows in the pic but many of the smaller areas and along the edges got burnt, this is due to my bit being a little dull, plus I didn't use a roughing pass and it really bit into the wood. Burns don't look bad anyhow, but I really need a new bit. Just used 2 poly clear coats on it.
Am doing another in walnut as I speak, looks flawless so far, I am doing this "standing proud" plus I did use a roughing on this one, so should turn out better, will post when able [shaping up to be a 6 hr cut, I'll be up to 4am waiting on it].
[ps - Don't tell Jax I made this, he'll kick my a$% !]

Walnut, same size as the poplar. Nearly 6 hours but the "proud" look was worth the extra time, am doing a purple heart as I speak - Note to self: Start 6 hour projects a bit earlier !

I liked the SOA, watched every episode on Netflix. It is easy to identify with the characters. And a lot of those actors in real life support wounded warriors and i have seen pictures of them interacting with marines at Camp Pendleton. But the characters they played were all crooks, even the cops were crooks. But it was a great series, especially since i ride a Harley.

Very good show, no doubt. I have some close insight into outlaw clubs, alot of their stuff is spot on, some not even close. Most outlaw guys I know love it, put a little extra aura on them by default.
The crescendo of violence towards the last season was so far over the top that it made me cringe, but that tends to be the way series like this develop, they have to outdo themselves each and every week and end up getting ludicrous. But the majority of the series was a good watch, I heard they might be doing a prequel series, going back to the roots of the club.

Wenge, fresh off the table, should look stellar once its cleaned up and clear coat applied.

Luck of the draw on the rifle, is one of the highest points and it picked up some striking grain patterns that faded out deeper down, almost as if by design.
Walnut already sold so I'll be making another one of those.

Thanks, I usually use flat but this is a semi gloss, highlights the details well without the over the top glare of gloss.

For holding detail, nothing beats wenge, very hard and dense wood. Downsides are the graining can be a grab bag, with some slabs jaw dropping and other areas in the same slab mediocre ,,, And very expensive and pretty hard to come by.

Lovely work I think the Wenge looks more in tune to the subject.
