Tribute piece

Post by mikeacg »

Every once in a while it's fun to get out the old wood cutting tools and do something different. I did use Aspire to cut the dates on the end so I can still post it here, right? I still have some touch-up work to do and then it will be stained and mounted on a base. I may make a plexi cover to keep the dust off.
This was done as a tribute to my late uncle. He was a longtime whittler (Did lots of chains and such so I thought this would be appropriate).
The wooden knife is an exact replica of the knife he used for carving and the broken link symbolizes his passing. I will be giving this to my aunt for Christmas.

Doing hand work certainly let's your mind wander differently than CNC:)
Positive it, And the thought that went into it, will be very much appreciated!
Great work and inspiration.
I've learned my lesson well. You can't please everyone,so you have to please yourself

Thanks Graham and Scott! I talked to her son Dave and his wife Patty and they were ready to send me the actual knife for the project when they heard about it but I thought it seemed more fitting to make the knife out of the same piece of wood - just like the chains are made. I know the first Christmas is always tough with losses like that so I hope it helps her remember him fondly...

Great work and very thoughtful , it's always good to go back to old school . There'a a lot of times I think should I use the bot or keep the hand skills sharp.
Your Aunt will really appreciate it, Pop's

Thanks Pops!

I just noticed that you are in Houghton Lakes. My buddy's mother lives there and we stop sometimes on our way downstate for Keryx training (Prison Ministry program).
I'd love to see your shop someday if you don't mind. I'll PM you.

Very well done. As someone who does not have the patience for something like that, I am incredibly impressed.

Thanks Glenn and Gordon! It has me kind of pumped up to do more hand work again. I found an old redwood flourish upstairs that I had started years ago and decided to make a shelf bracket out of it with a carved lily pad on the top. Not very useful but fun to look at...
