Thank You

A new project I have been working on for a local hat maker to fix his 19th century Parisian hatmaker device called "Conformateur." His grandfather was a hat maker in Paris and used this old device over most of his career.

The wooden fingers that mould around your head to take measurements were starting to fall apart. I am not sure what the original wood was but I used walnut and ebonized it using vinegar and steel wool. A neat project requiring some thinking on the jigs to get the parts made. There are 60 fingers on the device and it looks like maybe a third of them will need attention.

The photo shows two broken pieces, one new lower arm before ebonizing and a final "L" beam reinforced with brass sheet and pins. The long finger is about 5 inches.

The other project was to make some stair treads to my daughters room. I wanted to use butterfly's to hold the joints together on the curved steps and since Aspire makes it easy to get fancy; I did. Not only butterflys but dragonflys too. All functional 3/4 thick walnut set into douglas fir steps. Also did the moulding using Aspire including the fancy curve to the moulding edge. It is really is nice to be able to make your own moulding to any profile you want. In this case I copied some moulding that was in the house left over from the 19th century.

The moulding is made from old redwood rescued from some siding that was being thrown away.

Doug, I was wondering if your CNC class ever made any of those brackets?

Beautiful steps. Not your average butterfly key.
