Red Oak and Walnut Zank V-Inlay

Post by gkas »

I just finished some coasters as a gift to a friend. We're going to stop in and see him after the Denver get-together.

They are red oak coasters inlaid with walnut using the Zank V-Inlay. I was trying to think of a unique holder and the wife came up with the idea of using shell casings for the posts. I think the idea worked out great and really enhances the theme of the coasters.

Nice work! I really like the casings idea.
If you don't mind I may have to make a set for some one I know. Would make a great Christmas gift.

What a clever idea! The shell casing holder just knocked it out of the park.
Well done.

Thanks for all the comments.... My wife deserves all of the credit for the shell casing idea. I was still stuck in wood mode.

The first couple came out 'just ok'. I didn't have enough even clamping pressure from my regular clamps. I bought this from Amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PJ ... UTF8&psc=1 and made a small quick and dirty press. Worked out great. The press is about large enough for a box lid.

Thanks for adding your experience with project clamping, gkas. I've been thinking about adding a "book press" clamp to my shop for awhile, and your comments sealed the deal...ordered the hardware from Amazon Prime today, and look forward to building myself a little press for Zank V-Inlay projects asap.
