cutting molding need help

I need a comment on whether or not I should cut a relief in the back side of some molding I'm making.
I'm making some 5" wide molding that is suppose to match some 3" existing molding at least for the first 5".
I attached a end view picture of the 3" existing molding and a picture of the 5" molding sample that I'm going to be cutting. The back side of the 3" existing molding has a 1/16" relief cut that's about 1 1/2" long.
So my question is should I cut a 1/16" relief in the back side of the 5" molding? Is it cut to make the molding less resident to twisting or cupping over time?
Thanks for the help.
