You don't need a 1.25" cutting length, as long as the bit extends at least 1.25" past the collet (1.5" would be better for more clearance).

Russell, Plans are great! I'm currently making some jigs and setting up my table.... Statement and question... I am not a Aspire Wizard. Is there a way for me to stretch your leg design w out distorting the joint? I want to make a 24" high stool. After a few hours of messing around, I have zero results... lol

I do make 24" stools, but they need a support because the legs are so long (also for you to rest your feet on when sitting so high up) and the angle of the joint area is different. What you can do (if you want to design it yourself), is cut the model 1" below the joint and use your own vectors and a two rail sweep to make the leg longer. To make the two rail sweep disappear into the existing model, go into the measure tool and use the 'model cross section' feature to get the vector for the two rail sweep.

If you don't want to model it yourself, I will be offering my 24" stool files at a discount for those who have purchased the 17.5" files. The tops are exactly the same.

Russell,
I am interested in purchasing your stool plans and was wondering if you have a price for both the short and tall stools? I would be interested in both.

Thanks
Ron

I haven't got the files and instructions ready for the taller stools yet, but when I do I will definitely offer them for half price to those who have purchased the smaller stools. The tops are the same, but the legs have different geometry (and length, of course) plus there is the support that adds another level of complexity to the project (different style of angled joint). I'm still working out a method of cutting the dowel holes for the joint without the expensive dowel jig that I use.

Russell,
Thanks for a great set of plans. Worked exactly as you had explained in the plans.

Looks good Charlie! I'm impressed that you did an inlay AND the dished out seat rather than using the flat top seat with the inlay.

Well, Russell, hope you don't mind....and I hope you subscribe to the notion that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Here's my version of your design. I did cheat a bit here and there to make the design something I could handle. The joints are not nearly as tight, the legs are not curved, and the some of the edges are sharp instead of being rounded, but as they say...on a tall horse, in a high wind...and about 100 yards away, they kinda, sorta, look similar. (It really does have four legs, in case you were wondering...just an odd perspective.)

The wood is sapele, because I could not find a good piece of walnut at my usual supplier. This is my first time using this wood, and it is quite impressive in color and consistency. Maybe I will try a chair out of this stuff.

That looks great Angie!

You have the joint down, now you just need to work on the transition area from the joint to the leg, and add some curve to the legs. I think that really adds to the looks of the stool. Even if you can't model that area, its not too hard to carve it down by hand after. I built these stools with a table saw and bandsaw and pattern maker rasps for years before I got my cobra.

That looks great. I'm starting my stool this weekend. :)

I did the same thing with the legs, built a jig to do all four at once.

Hopefully I will have some pics next week.
