Clamping inserts
While refining my stool files and testing them so they could be cut on any machine, I had to design some maple inserts to glue into my spoil board to hold my Rockler clamps (my t-track was in the wrong position, and I wanted to test the new files without using my jigs to make sure they cut properly).
These are cut using 1/2" endmill, then inserted upside down into 1.25" holes cut into the spoil board. They can be inserted anywhere you need them, and surfaced with the rest of your spoil board. The t-bolt on the Rockler clamps inserts in the slot, and then rotates 90 degrees to lock in position. The clamps can be tightened as much as necessary without harming the inserts.
I've included the file (makes 12 inserts) if anyone wants to use them. These will also be included with my stool files.

Re: Clamping inserts
Nice idea, thanks for the file. Are you sanding the last 1/10th" off the bottom?
BTW, looks like it's good that those clamps are aluminum.

Re: Clamping inserts
Sorry, forgot to mention that. I just break them loose after cutting. I cut a 0.65" deep pocket in the spoilboard, glue the plugs in, then surface off the tops. So it doesn't matter if you break the plugs off the blank, bandsaw them, or sand them off.Mike-S wrote:Nice idea, thanks for the file. Are you sanding the last 1/10th" off the bottom?

Re: Clamping inserts
Won't be long now. I just sent the files to someone to test cut them all on his machine, to make sure they are ready for others to use. Once I get his feedback, they are ready to go. Took a bunch of pictures this last weekend and wrote the instructions.antennasDIY wrote:Nice I can't wait to have a go at cutting a stool.

Wow Russell, everything you do is inspirational. More so for me because you're from my neck of the woods (I grew up in Breton, and my Grandparents live just outside of Millet).

Re: Clamping inserts
If you ever visit your grandparents, you definitely need to stop by and say hi. I'm about half way between Millet and Wetaskiwin, just west of 2A.Mobius wrote:Wow Russell, everything you do is inspirational. Re: Clamping inserts
Sweet I can't wait. I got my new digital drives today and am hooking them up. I hope they work great and run the steppers nice and smooth. Then I can give cutting a stool a go.
Waiting!

Re: Clamping inserts
Thank you Russell.
I have been wondering how to insert clamps on my spoilboard.
These tick all the right places
