Hi All
Ok so the weekend i was pottering around the workshop making some stuff for a colleague and I grabbed a coin and it is simple "material"
SO I had a spark of creativity and decided to see how it engraves. What i did was create a jig to hold the coin then I hot glued it in place (had to add some compressed air as it melted and moved the forst time), selected a 2mm straight flute carbid bit and a carbide 30deg 0.1mm engraver and set to work. I did a 0.3mm deap skim which took the surface off and left me with a "flat", NOT smooth, nickle surface - It was a little rough more than i would like... Then i had a "few" AI format pictures and selected a heart.
I engraved the coin to 0.2mm (maybe a bit more) then sprayed it black let it dry and then did a 0.05mm skim - a couple of times - then sanded it slightly so the edges were copper again.
Below is a pic. SO the question is - has anyone done this and how could i get a better quality surface? my stepover was 10% on the 2mm end mill.
Thanks in advance.
