Sanding 3d carving
Sanding 3d carving
Just wondering what methods/tools people are using to do finish sanding on 3d work? I just completed two 4 foot mantle pieces with a celtic weave in them. I am pleased with how they came out, but I am struggling with how to clean the piece up for finishing. I've included a picture of what I'm talking about.

Re: Sanding 3d carving
those sanding disks that micheal uses work great, you just have to be gentle with them as you can wear them out fast.
look up one of the mothly projects , he lists the source for them in almost every one.
also have used a burr bit in a dremel to undercut and hog some bad areas out.

woodmizer sawmill and joe's hybrid cnc, a good combination

Google "Mop Sander"
It works very well on 3-D models

Re: Sanding 3d carving
I just got this for Christmas. I have not used it on a project yet but I tried it on some scrape. Seems to work well so far.

Re: Sanding 3d carving
I use a sanding mop and the pen sander as well. My first sanding mop was 220 grit. I did not think that was rough enough so now I am at 180 which should be fine. With the pen sander 220 was way to fine and now I use 150. Having a needle file helps too. I cant honestly say that I have ever done a perfect sanding on 3-d but do the best I can. There are just some areas that you can not get to.
Re: Sanding 3d carving
I usually start by vacuuming off any dust, then scrub with a toothbrush, vacuum again.
Then I apply a very thin coat of water based polyurethane, this stiffens the fibers and makes the fuzzies easier to remove.
Next I use a dremel tool with red 3M scotch brite discs that I make by cutting them out with a 1 1/2" hole saw. The discs work well and they are cheap. For the chatter marks I have a Flexcut carving gouges that match the diameter of the cutter used on the router. This all goes pretty quickly.

For future reference, steep "walls" tend to show tool marks. You can reduce or eliminate these by applying a draft to your component. It will look better and require less cleanup.

What do you mean by a draft? I haven't heard that term before.

Third icon on third row modifies your model so that any walls (straight up-and-down surfaces) become tipped by a few degrees to help the machining process...I think the term came from making models for casting - they must have "draft" so the model will release from the mold.rsetina wrote:What do you mean by a draft? Re: Sanding 3d carving
Actually I guess it affects all "walls"...the 90 degree vertical ones as well as the rest.

I'm just posting in order to subscribe to this thread. I need a better way to clean up reliefs, too.
Thanks!

Re: Sanding 3d carving
A word of caution about the "Draft".
It will apply that new slant to any and all vertical "walls" that are shown in the 3D view and create a new component from them.
So, if you have three components shown in the 3D view and you want to add a "draft" to only one , you will need to hide the other two components or you will get a new component made up of the existing three components.
It will not delete the original three but you may not get the effect you're looking for.

All great info guys. Thanks for the replies. I'm still new to the aspire program and you all help me learn things I wouldn't normally use.
