text in a dish
I almost have got what I want but not quite. So one is the 3d model preview. The other is the tool path preview. There is a small ridge along the text I don't want and also a flat area around the text. What is causing this? can anyone help with an idea? I have searched here and can't find anything similar.
If you want to look at the file it's here.

Re: text in a dish
That is happening because the text is standing higher than the material surface. I would make the dish deeper and flatten the bottom to equal the hight of the letters. Then change the angle of the shape so it will accommodate the letter to lay flat along the bottom.
The real easy way would be to grab the logo and reduce the size to they don't protrude out of the dish. That make the logo smaller though.

Re: text in a dish
Your line around the edge is because you have the text protruding above the edge of the dish so the dish portion is being sunk down in the material by that depth to allow the text to be machined. You're getting the flat area around your text because the curvature of your ball nose is not letting the bit get in close enough to the base. Toolpath it with a .0313 bit and you'll see a great improvement there.antennasDIY wrote:I almost have got what I want but not quite. So one is the 3d model preview. Re: text in a dish
Hah, beat me to it. AntennasDIY, take note of the way esteeme1 did his dish with the flat bottom. If you look at my site you'll see that there are only a few dished models that don't have a flat bottom, this problem is one of the reasons for that (although not the main reason).esteeme1 wrote:That is happening because the text is standing higher than the material surface. Re: text in a dish
Ok I will re-jig the bottom and see how it goes. It is the center of a crib board which was dished. But it will probably look OK with a flat bottom as well.
Thanks guys, I reserve the right to ask more questions!! Ha ha

Hi Antennas,
You can still use the gradual slope but you will need to bring the lettering in from the edge so it is lower than the surface plane.

Re: text in a dish
Ok I thought it was. When I rotate the model it all seems to be below the top surface. Mind you this is my first from scratch "dish with text" project. The other one was just a dish I dragged a 3D deer into and cut.
I'll look at it tonight. Thanks.

Re: text in a dish
One good way to double-check whether anything is above the edge of a dish is to use the "Scale Z height of model" icon. When you click on this if the Maximum Z indicates anything other than 0 (zero) then it means you have part of what is in the dish, sticking out above the edges.
Thanks,
James

It looks like you posted this quite some ago but, I'm still catching up on my reading.antennasDIY wrote:I almost have got what I want but not quite. So one is the 3d model preview. I followed the example in the Vectric tutorial for "Multiply Combine mode" (http://support.vectric.com/tutorials/V8 ... 3DMOD.html) using your file and I came up with this. It's too big to upload so here in the link to view it.
