Question- about large JPEG wood grain files?

Can someone tell me what DPI should a bitmap or JPEG of wood grain before you import it to Aspire?
I'm making typical 4'x8' signs with a wood grain texture background.
I got some high res photos about 20"x30".
I bring them up in Corel, to the size I'll need for the background.
Then save at about 150 DPI JPEG. That's like 22 MG.
Is this right?
It sure takes up a lot of time and space to work with.

I don't want to sound like a wise guy here, so don't misunderstand, but how is it working out?

Have you tried lowering the DPI and seeing what the results were?

I am no expert since I don't work a lot with backgrounds so understand I am just throwing something out. You didn't mention what color mode you were using for the woodgrain photos. If they are color, would they work just as well in greyscale? That would make them smaller.

I have noticed, that different programs save jpg's in different sizes, depending how it retains original clarity, use paint.net it has a slider at time of save and you can see the size of file.

I have also been taught that every time you save or copy a jpeg, it loses quality, so saving the original in a png (or other) format and then just doing a "save as" in jpeg whenever you want to use it might make sense...

Corel also lets you set a variety of preferences before saving to change the file size.
