Trouble carving a quarter

Post by k4mg »

I'm trying to carve George Washington's face from a quarter using Aspire. I've got the vectorized face in, and can do things with it using the "Create Shape From Vectors" control. But none of my attempts seem to produce a life like raised image. I was wondering if anyone has a hint, technique, or thought on how to do this. I have attached the vectorized image from the 2D view before I messed it up.

Thanks, Barry

Here is a crude attempt at it. You have to take the vectors and edit them to fit what you would like to do. In this case, I made seperate vector for the entire head, the hair, eyes. Then I just sculpted it a bit. Not great but it might help.

Also, I used paint.net to thicken the lines a little so they would trace better in Aspire. Here's the image I used.

dman,

Your result is much better than what I was able to accomplish. I have the head vectorized, and would have been glad to attach it if I had known you were going to actually carve it out. Could you describe what tool and settings you used to get the head outline to raise up, flatten out, but still look natural? I used various angle and heights as shown in the attached, but never got the natural look you achieved. I also have the outline separated from the hair, etc. Did you include the chin detail, one or both lines? I played with this a lot and never got it.

Thanks, Barry

What about using a greyscale image of the quarter.
Then watch the fish tutorial and try that technique.

Laying the greyscale over the sculpted vectors..

Worth a try..

Here is the Aspire file. You can see how I had to edit the vectors to get the results. I hope when you click on the vector and go to add the setting I used will show up. Hope this helps you out.

This took me about 5 minutes.

No vectors involved!

dman,

Thanks for the file, I see your angle settings are different, I'll try it, and thanks for your help.

Greasetattoo,

How did you do it with no vectors? Yours looks like a 3d photo, very accurate.

Thanks, Barry

Barry,
What I did was find a photo on google.
Which happens to be the quarter.

Then I just imported it into Apsire.
Created a component from the bitmap. (button)

Then I applied the smoothing filter to the working component. (button)
Played with the sliders tell I got it right..

Thats about it!
Pretty simple...

The US Mint has an excellent site for coin images. The new Ultra High Relief coin is pretty cool. Looks like a job for Aspire.
