Help

Post by mpjensen »

I am trying to create a plaque for my daughters basketball coach. I am having a heck of a time. I want to create it myself and would like someone to tell me what I am doing wrong. I am creating an oval plaque 10 inches tall and 7 wide .75 thick. I want a 1 inch boarder and then a dish in the center with a basketball protruding in the center. Seems easy enough. I can get the oval drawn but when I try to make it a dish it is always positive never a dish. What am I doing wrong???

Thanks Mike

When you make your dish, make sure you select "subtract" and not "add".

If your still having issues, let us know.

Can you post jpg's?
It might give us a clearer idea of what you are trying to accomplish.

If I had to guess, you have vectors that define the seams and you want to know how to put them on the basketball component..?

I would do the same thing as the dish. Subtract them and then copy the basketball and seams into the working model and clean them up with the sculpting tools.

ok that is not working, I tried to use the sculpting tool but am just way to shaky. How can I subtract the seam vectors from the ball?

I think you misunderstood me. You want to subtract the seams from the ball, just like you subtracted the dish from the plaque. Then after you do that, bring it into the working model to smooth it out a little.

Does that makes sense?

I updated the plaque file I set up for you to analyze. You can use the link above (in the original post) or this one:
Plaque

I put in some seams, but I have not sculpted them smooth yet. This way you can see how I got the seems to show up.

When you get to the point of smoothing them, copy the "basketball" and "seams" components into the working model and use the sculpting tools to smooth the edges to your liking. And then make a component out of the result.

Hope this helps,
Tim

Tip for getting crisp detail on the ball is to model the base shape
and then Engrave the detail using the option to Project the toolpath
onto the 3D model

This will allow the smooth curved regions to be machined quickly
using a largeish ball nose cutter . Then VCarve / Engrave the detail
into the curved surface with an engraving / V cutter.

Hope this makes sense.

Good point Tony,

An advantage to doing it this way, is that you can add a texture and then Vcarve through it with a flat depth for a cleaner look.
