3d Machining Question

Post by Phil »

I am setting up to make Celtic Broaches. The material is .25" thick set on top of a .25" spoilboard. I plan to 3D machine the design to a depth of .25" with a .125 round nose bit. I have set up tabs to hold the work in place. However, I would like to cut into the spoil board about .03" so remove the edges from the perimeter of the design. How can I make the .03" cut into the spoilboard?

Phil,

Add .03" base height to the model and set the material thickness to .28".

Wouldn't this be presuming the Z zero is at the top of the material? If the Z zero is set to the machine bed, and with material exactly 1/4" thick, you'd get a flat area on the top of the design and a "plinth" of 0.03".
