Rotary Text Appearing Backwards

Post by Mark's Wood Chips »

I'm new to rotary machining and have watched all the tutorials but my first attempt at V-carving spiral text on a cylinder failed. Well, maybe not failed because it carved OK but it's backwards. If I were inside the cylinder looking outwards, it would appear correct. The preview appears correct but the physical piece is backwards. There is a "flip design" checkbox in the job setup dialog but it doesn't seem to change the preview after a re-calculation. My machine is a brand new ShopSabre 23 set up at the factory so I presumed it was set up correctly. I would appreciate any suggestions to resolve this issue.

Mark...
Power down the controller. On the stepper drive for the rotary there are 4 motor terminals marked A+, A-, B+ & B-. Swap the wires on B+ & B-

Or you can mirror the text prior to calculating the toolpath and/or turn the head of the rotary 180°, side to side or end to end.

Thank you gentlemen! I thought the A axis was reversed and you confirmed my suspicion. It's a WINCNC controller - is there a software fix in the WINCNC.INI file? If not, I'll swap wires.

Update: I found a parameter for motor direction in axisspec in the WINCNC.INI file. Changed it and everything looks good.

You have got it sorted and that is great.

Just for your information there is a line in the WinCNC Post Processor that is as follows,

ROTARY_WRAP_X = "-A"

Removing the minus sign will change the Vectric Gcode output.

Different manufacturers and users will argue about what is the correct direction of rotation for a rotary axis.

I always go with what I believe to be convention as the diagram shows,
