Double sided convex cutting
Hi,
Think I have asked something similar before, but maybe not.
I am cutting 22 pieces that have to fit together perfectly, as they are being cast in aluminium.
I have just cut 3 from 150mm HDU block but the tooling is not picking up the slightly angled sides.
I understand looking down from the top it would be an undercut but when assigning toolpaths and doing the back that part is still missing, which means they have to be sanded at correct angle on a beltsander, the info is definitely in the 3D file but not getting cut on the job.
Just wondered if anyone knew why.
Cheers,
Henry

Re: Double sided convex cutting
In your previous post you was saying you bring in two files, which seems to me why you're having troubles. Try grouping the parts prior to importing, so they are just one model. At the import section, slide the plane position up or down until the plane hits the undercut. Take the difference to enter into the overcut distance. THEN CENTER THE MODEL AGAIN.
Another way, If the undercut is deeper on one side vs. the other, you can select the limit plane Component Properties and either increase or decrease the NEGITIVE base height.
Even if there is no overcut, I always put a number at least 1/2 the mill diameter so I can avoid a profile cut.

Hi Gary,
Thanks for taking the time to reply, I will try that, and can post the file perhaps if I dont get it right so you or anyone else can see what I am doing.

Re: Double sided convex cutting
Also, if you pull the slider all the way to bottom, it will import the full model on both sides. Then, you can play with the zero planes generated (or overcut distance value) to limit the depth of the cut.

Re: Double sided convex cutting
Gary and Mohamed, thanks for your replies, I did make the top half, 11 parts duplicating files on each part and just made sure I knew there position in the block, am on the last 2 of 22 parts in total, takes about a day to make each piece.

Henry,
I'm glad you got things worked out. When you're done post a picture, but bigger! The one you posted is a wee bit small to see any detail.

Here is a closer one of the panels. When it comes back from casting in aluminium I will fit LED in some of the letters rest will just have polished fronts.

Have been cutting the under part all over Christmas, cut last 2 today, hopefully you can see abit better, the backs are just roughed as they wont be seen, once they are all welded together in aluminium.

Here is one of the first pieces cast in aluminium, when all 22 parts are cast they will be welded together to make the form in the pic, with LED in some letters, just the lid left to make. Happy New Year!

It looks like a Giant Letter Ball you would see on an old electric typewriter. I still own one that stuck away in a closet. Turned out great!

Dating myself, but have thought from the beginning it looked like an IBM "Selectric" ball machine that were just bought, and we used to fight over in High School(only had 2:)...because typing was supposed to be so useful in College

I’m loving this! Very interesting project!
Is this going to be part of an art piece displayed somewhere? I’m looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Hi Scott,
I used one of those when I was working as a receptionist in a previous life, several decades ago.
Cheers and happy New Year.

Yep Wolffie.........MUCH quieter than the Royals in the room...AND came with THREE font balls!!!
Never could afford one, but my beat up Royal manual did crank out some work!
It's going to be a Stunning piece in aluminium!!
Great AND time consuming work!
Congrats!!
