Extra Bit Moves

Post by gkas »

I'm doing a very simple inlay using the Inlay Toolpath. The male came out fine using a 1/16" bit. The female pocket worked fine for the roughing, but the run with the finish 1/16" bit is acting real funny. After after doing the fine clearance on the oval and initials it is pecking the bit on the same path every 1/8" or so. This is at the end of the first pass. I expect it to do the same on the second pass. The oval is even drawn with Bezier Curves. It's working, but taking forever.

This is Aspire Version 9.510

P.S. I just looked at the finish step and it shows a time of 32 minutes!!

You are getting the "sewing machine" effect. You should send your file to support@vectric.com so they can fine-tune their algorithm.

FYI, in this case it would actually be faster to do the whole thing with just a 1/16" bit rather than using two tools.

I downloaded your file and ran it in the trial edition of Aspire and got the same results. Then I recalculated the toolpaths for the ellipse without the letters and got an estimated time of 30 minutes for the Pocket Inlay. Similar result for a new ellipse of the same size.

I drew the same ellipse in my copy of VCarve Pro and got an estimated time of 57 seconds! using the same values for everything including the tools.

Gotta squash that BUG! I've sent an e-mail to Vectric Tech support.

I don't know about the "sewing machine" effect. I'm not allowed to use the sewing machine in our house.

I'm having the same problem with mine. It's taking forever. Feel free to forward to the wizards at Vectric if it isn't my fault. Still learning.

Hello Gerry.

Thank you for the file.

This is something I am aware of and have let development know about.

In the meantime, you can achieve results for your inlay toolpath using an Offset technique and the pocket toolpath.

Select your vectors and open the Offset tool.

Set the Offset as "Outwards" with a distance of the radius of your Finishing Pocket tool (0.03125" for a 0.625" bit for example).
Turn off Sharp corners and turn on Delete original and Select New.
Example Image: https://www.screencast.com/t/9vdgKYt1fzv

Now click Offset.
Next click Inwards and Offset twice more.
Lastly, click Outwards and Offset once more.

Your vectors are now altered suitably for a Pocket toolpath.
Calculate a normal pocket toolpath with these vectors with the same tools you use in the Inlay toolpath, and it should now work perfectly as a replacement for the female inlay while we work on this.

I hope this helps

Best Regards
Charlotte

We are experiencing the same problem. In a production environment we can not have this type of error during this time of year. Anyway to roll back to a previous version?

I've tried this workaround for the attached file and it is not working, the same extra bit moves are being put into the finish toolpath.

Basically you're saying to offset the vector by 1/32 outward, then inward twice, and back outward to get it back to the original vector, right? All with the sharp corners option off, delete/select options on. I tried that with both the MeYou, and YouMe layers in this file and it doesn't work. Please advise.

Nevermind, updating to the latest 9.5 fixed it.

A workaround just to get it completed would be to cut the whole thing with a 1/8" inch bit.
