A Bucket List Project Underway

Postby TReischl » Fri Jun 22, 2018 12:30 am

I have wanted to build a wooden clock for years. Just one of those things, much better than climbing Mt. Everest.

This is a clock from Brian Law, #22. It is quite complex, about 14 gears and lots of small parts. If you are contemplating building a clock, I can highly recommend his plans. They are extremely well done. He even provides STEP files that will load into Fusion 360 for 3D viewing.

Anyway, here is a shot of the parts I have done so far. As always, Aspire worked flawlessly.

Most of the parts are 9mm hard maple. The profiling was done with a 2mm and .125 end mill. The 2 mm bit surprised the heck out of me. It was from china. I pushed it up to .025 DOC and 70 IPM without breaking it.

The boards under the parts are glue ups for the front and back frame pieces. I cannot mill them out until I have all the bearings on hand. I half lapped pieces together to provide better grain orientation.

This is a really fun project. I have been working on it off and on for about a month now.

Can't wait to see the finished clock.

I also have had a wooden clock on my bucket list for years...

Thanks for sharing.

Looking forward to seeing this progress Ted

Not sure bucket lists are a good idea for me, I just seem to keep adding things & never get any of it completed

Haven't done a search but I am sure that there have been posts in the past about the clock plans he produces

Thanks everyone!

I will try to keep you all updated, BUT. . .this is a slowww process. There are over 100 parts in this clock. Then, there is the fitting of the pieces. This is not a project that you want to start a week before it needs to be completed.

On a side note, I just watched a series on YouTube of a guy building a brass clock. He put over 1000 hours into it. Of course, he is a perfectionist and one heckuva machinist.

But I will keep you all updated as things progress. Probably the most interesting part to see relative to cnc router work is the front frame. I can't wait to see that myself, but the bearings are not all here yet. :::sigh:::
