Tapered flat bottom bit

Post by fordtman »

Hi people, can anyone tell how to specify a tapered bit with a flat bottom? I have an Amana 46571 CNC 2D and 3D Carving Flat Bottom tools, 6.2 Degree tapered Angle, 1/32" Diameter flat nose and 1/8" shank. The tool database has a form for adding a tapered ball nose tool but not for a tapered flat nose tool. To enter the correct configuration do I add it to the database as an engraving tool? The 46571 has the same profile as a tapered ball nose (e.g. Amana 46573) but has a flat tip. Will the software handle it correctly if I enter it as an engraving tool? Thanks in advance.

You probably can.

A big advantage of Vectric product is the quality of the simulation (preview toolpaths). So if there is a tool description that matches your tool profile, just copy it, enter your tool parameters and try it on screen with the toolpaths you wanna use. Easy - no risk.

Gary,

Is it a V9 feature? In V8.5 I have "Radiused End Mill" and "Tapered Ball Nose" categories, but no "Tapered End Mill".

Try entering it in the Engraving Bit category. That should allow your angle and flat requirements.

Of course, you could always opt to create your own custom profile instead, but in this case isn't necessary.

Yup, this is how I have those bits entered in mine, works just peachy.

LGM...
My bad. Viable bit category, not a Vectric tool db category. Use the Engraving Tool category.

Thanks all for the advice. I entered the bit as an engraving bit and ran the carving successfully. The Amana 46571 did a good job of cleaning out the corners in the flat areas inside and out. There were a few small tools involved as the carving is only 85mm by 32mm.
