4th Axis

Post by Henri Monnier »

Just finished the build and install of my 4th axis http://www.htbx.org/cnc/4th.pdf, and now have to learn how to set up a wrapped job to use it. Just wondering if anyone has a small project file for me to try, so i can see it in action. I've been playing with it using jogs etc. The pdf describes the build and the selection of parts.....
Thanks
Henri

I can provide a simple file. Is your rotary parallel to the X axis or the Y axis?

Thanks,
Driving the rotating stepper motor with the y axis...... so i guess that means parallel to x?

Come to Jim McGrew's Camp at the end of April.
Randall will be giving a presentation on the rotary along with Brady Watson and Gary Campbell..
Some of the best minds out there on this stuff.

*** I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO ANY MACHINE IF YOU TRY THIS FILE. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! ***

Cylinder Orientation Along X Axis (wrap Y values)
Round blank that is 1.5" diameter
Machinable Length: 12" (make sure you have enough extra so you don't run into the headstock or the tailstock)
XY Zero on the LEFT (did I mention to make sure you have enough extra length so you don't run into the headstock or the tailstock?)
Z zero on the CENTER of the cylinder (i.e. the point of your tailstock)
90 degree V bit 0.5" diameter or larger

Check that the Z clearance settings are appropriate for your setup.

Validate that the feeds and speeds are correct for your machine.

This should take about 10 minutes of machine time. The completed piece should have a slight taper in the middle.

For those who want to follow along....

If you don't have a 1.5" diameter dowel sitting around the shop you can go to your lumber pile or lumberyard and get a 2x2, which is really a 1.5" X 1.5".

You can then use the Rounding gadget to smooth off the 2x2 into a 1.5" diameter blank.

The attached file is set up to use a 0.5" bit for rounding off the 2X2.

If you have a router table I would suggest using a 90 degree V-bit to remove the corners before chucking up the workpiece on the rotary axis (fancy term for lathe :D).
